Gel Overlay vs. Acrylic Extensions: Which Nail Enhancement is Right for You?

Demystifying Nail Enhancements: Gel vs. Acrylic

Choosing the right nail treatment can be confusing. Do you need a gel overlay, or should you go with classic acrylic extensions? At Sugar Nail Bar on the Danforth, we believe in educating our clients so they make the healthiest choices for their nail plates.

Gel Overlays (Builder/Rubber Base)

  • What it is: A flexible gel applied directly to the natural nail to reinforce it.
  • Best for: People who want to grow their own natural nails, prefer a lightweight, natural look, and value flexibility.
  • Removal: Soak-off or gentle file-off using e-file.

Acrylic Extensions

  • What it is: A liquid monomer and powder polymer mix that hardens into a rigid shell. Usually used to add significant length via nail tips.
  • Best for: Clients wanting extreme length or dramatic 3D shapes who have naturally strong nail roots.
  • Removal: Needs acetone soaking which can dry out nail beds if overused.

We generally recommend structured gel overlays for long-term nail health, as they minimize chemical exposure and move naturally with your fingers.
