After a few weeks, you can see a gap near the base of your structured gel manicure. Does that mean all the gel needs to come off before your next set?
Not necessarily. A structured gel refill can maintain a suitable existing overlay without removing every trace of product. The important part is assessing what remains attached and rebuilding the shape for the nail's current length.
At Sugar Nail Bar on Toronto's Danforth, we remove most of the previous structured gel during a refill, remove lifted material, and leave a thin, firmly adhered layer. Here is why the appointment involves more than filling the visible gap.
Why the shape needs adjusting as your nails grow
Your nail grows forward with the gel attached to it. That means the support built into the overlay moves forward too.
The apex is the raised area that helps give the enhancement its structure. As it grows out, its position no longer matches the nail in the same way. Adding gel only near the cuticle would not fully address that change.
A refill therefore includes rebalancing: reducing the old structure and building a new one suited to the current nail. Length and shape are part of that decision.
For example, imagine a short square manicure that has grown longer while the colour still looks good. You might want to return to the original length. The technician needs to adjust the overlay for that shorter shape, rather than keep the grown-out profile and simply add more gel at the base.
What happens to the old product at Sugar?
For our structured gel service, we use DARK Smart Builder Gels, a hard gel. During a suitable refill, our approach is to:
- Reduce most of the previous product: approximately 85–90%, as a general description of our process rather than a fixed target for every nail.
- Remove lifted material: a layer that has separated from the nail is not the layer we aim to keep.
- Retain a thin, firmly attached layer: this helps limit repeated filing directly over the same natural nail surface.
- Rebuild the structure: rebalance the overlay for the nail's current length and shape.
The retained layer is part of the maintained overlay. It does not mean the old thickness stays in place with another full layer added on top.
Is leaving some gel better than a full removal?
Neither option is automatically better for every appointment. Retaining suitable product can reduce unnecessary filing of the natural nail, but the remaining material still needs assessment. The technician must be able to inspect the nail and identify separation beneath the coating; colour that looks intact is not enough on its own.
A refill is also not a promise that the same overlay can be maintained indefinitely. Product compatibility and the condition of the existing set matter, particularly if you are arriving with work from another salon. Tell us what product was used if you know.
Reinforcement supports the nail while it is worn. It does not heal the natural nail or turn a refill into a treatment for nail damage.
When should you book your next appointment?
At Sugar, around three weeks is our usual starting recommendation for structured gel maintenance. We adjust that timing to how the set is wearing:
- Chipping before then: we reassess the manicure and may recommend returning sooner.
- An intact set: three to four weeks may be appropriate, depending on growth, lifestyle and hand use.
- A change in your routine: more manual work or a different preferred length can affect the maintenance plan.
These are review intervals, not guaranteed wear times. If you notice lifting or chipping, contact us rather than waiting solely because your next appointment is already booked. Avoid picking or peeling product off yourself; the American Academy of Dermatology recommends arranging removal instead of picking gel polish.
What should you book if you are unsure?
Check our service menu, or contact Sugar if you are unsure which maintenance option matches your existing set. Mention:
- The service you last had.
- When it was applied.
- Whether you have noticed lifting or chipping.
If you are ready to plan your next visit, book an appointment at 1842 Danforth Ave, Toronto. We can discuss the length and shape you want to maintain, along with how your previous manicure has worn.
